The Boy on the Bridge

by

Gareth Pilkington

To be read by awl on Monday 16th October 2006

The world's a fine place. It's the people that are the problem, isn't it? So it shouldn't be too hard to live happily as long as you keep them all at arm's length. And if you make it clear you don't want to know them, it's logical they won't want to know you. But what happens when someone appears for whom the rules of logic don't apply?

Jonjo
early twenties: looks like a teenager, attractive, a dropout from Oxford Uni, a commitment phobe. Believes he has everything in his life sorted and rather despises those who haven't sorted theirs
Matthew Stathers
Linda
late 30s to mid 40s, attractive, carries equal significance at two crucial points (the opening and after Ziggy has run away). A former social worker in an unhappy marriage who has almost adopted Ziggy
Stephanie Connell
Ziggy
late teens but mentally rather younger, perhaps a sufferer of high level autism. Very literal and very innocent
Ben Lloyd-Hughes
Malc
mid twenties, a garage mechanic turned wanderer with Jonjo believes he's god's gift to women but not bright enough for those he tries to pick up
Chris Bell
Kathy
twenty: student of Durham Uni taking a year out who prefers her men to be a challenge
Fleur Wheeler
Directed by
Ian Buckley

In their own way each of the four secondary characters want a piece of Jonjo. The relationships are real but also have a symbolism. To Jonjo Linda is a parental figure in may ways, and Ziggy a child. Malc represents friendship and Kathy sexual dalliance, or maybe more. If you are being pulled in four ways, three have to be let go or you are torn apart.
